Monica's Garden Foibles

A Quick Update and Second Guest Post by The Iron Ant

Hello! It's The Iron Ant again, from the previous post! Monica wanted to participate in Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, but she's been a little distracted trying to ready her garden for a tour tomorrow. Not only doesn't she have recent photos to show, but she didn't even realize it was the 15th until she started seeing all the GBBD posts! Why she thought her garden would be ready for a tour, I don't know, and neither does she (I asked her).

I noticed Monica has been doing funny things lately. For example, she complains about how much there is to do outside and then spent all day yesterday volunteering at the master gardener phone help line!

On Wednesday, she found a morel mushroom in a most unusual way. She was digging out a huge clump of tansy, to make room for a chokeberry, and jumped on the shovel with both feet. Only the shovel hit a very big, thick tree root, which sent her flying, landing ungraciously on some balloon flowers, Helenium, gooseneck loosetrife, and the morel in question, which came off at the base of the stem. The other plants, and her behind, are fine.

In other news, very strong winds yesterday toppled Piney again, despite the brick recently added to the bottom of her pot, and knocked a winter-sowing tray upside down onto the ground. Fortunately, it had its lid on and the soil didn't spill too much. The cell pack containing her main seeds of concern, wild petunia from MMD, seem to be OK but it's hard to say. We'll just have to wait and see.

  1. Dear IA~~Please let Monica know we understand! I was tempted to not post today and just visit! Did she eat the morel?

Boy am I glad my garden isn't on the tour! All the rain has created a mess of weeds!

    Good luck tomorrow! Gail

  2. Monica is a brave woman, having a garden tour! :) If my garden was on tour my guests would have to wear special glasses so they couldn't see the weeds in some of the beds.

  3. You know what I don't understand is why we are so meticulous about preparing our garden making sure everything is just so- so when we know all gardeners are the same. Right now if any one of us were asked to do a tour of our gardens we would practically kill ourselves to make everything perfect. When we know every person that will be visiting, has a garden that was in the same shape ours was before we started cleaning! LOL How crazy it that? But I have to admit, I would be the same way, every pine nugget in place and not a weed to be seen. All dead foliage cleaned up and trimmed. Oh and then there’s the impossible task of keeping everything deadheaded! We gardeners are crazy people, it’s all about the initial “Wow!” factor!--Randy

  4. Iron Ant, your getting pretty good at this blogging thing. If I had a garden tour it would have to be conducted in row boats. It just keeps raining here.

    Wish Monica good luck.

  5. Hi Iron Ant - please tell Monica not to worry - it'll be fine tomorrow and all the visitors will be SO glad that it's not their garden that they won't notice the odd weed! :)

  6. Hi IA......please give Monica my very best wishes....

I would not give a garden tour to anyone at the moment....strong winds have brought down leaves, branches and reshaped my shrubs....all in all I have to much to do.....

  7. An oncoming garden tour would send everyone off. And when it's in one day even more so! Good luck and good weather!

  8. Well Iron Ant, you just pass along to Monica to focus on her garden and not volunteer so much as to put herself behind (it's really hard I know but it's okay to say no sometimes!) I know it will be great regardless! And if anyone says otherwise-off with their noses!

  10. Iron Ant, so pleased to meet you! I enjoy your sense of humor almost as much as Monica's:) Tell Monica to relax and not to worry too much; it's that time of year when I get all stressed out, too, wondering how I will ever get all the work done around here, especially when the garden is knee-deep in mud. Of course, that's easy for me to say--I don't have anyone coming to visit my garden:)

Glad she didn't have any ill effects from the mushroom hunting:) Tell her good luck with her tour, and to take a nap afterwards!

  11. Hi Iron Ant, poor Monica! I wish you could help her out with a little weeding rather along with the blogging. We do appreciate your prose though. We used to have morels at our first TN house, but never found any by flying through the air and landing on them. A unique technique!

  12. Hi IA, please tell Monica I think she's brave too. She really shouldn't worry though. You're sure to be the center of attention anyway. Just be yourself, and you'll be a hit. Have fun tomorrow!

    Yum, a morel - it's a good omen!

  13. Hello, Iron Ant! You're a pretty good stand-in.

I'd thought I was to be on the annual garden tour in June, but I have a wedding and family reunion that has taking precedence. Maybe next year. (And Maybe you'd be kind enough to come blog for me?) ;-)

  16. You seem to have a strong morel sense, Monica. Perhaps this is what makes you work so hard to present a perfect garden? I think what Jamie and Randy said is so true, I suppose it's like cleaning house for guests. Personally, I'm glad for the guests as housekeeping is always far down on my list. So maybe garden tours or visitors are just good incentives for keeping things beautiful.

  17. Can we talk about how lucky you are to be adopted by Monica. Sounds like you admire her as much as her fans do! Keep a keen eye and ear on visitors ...

My garden club toured my garden last week. Fortified with glasses of 'May Wine', all looked wonderful!
